Valentine Color Sorting Sensory Bin

I love that my kids (2 & 4 years old) both love these sensory bins! Olivia still loves the basic feel of the rice and dumping it into the cups and bowls, but she's starting to join Aaron in color sorting and counting activities!

For Aaron, he sorted the items by using the tongs for extra fine-motor skill practice. Then he counted out 16 items (16 is his number of the week for preschool). Then it was free-play time!

Materials:

  • Pink-dyed Rice: Pour rice into a large ziplock bag. Add a splash of vinegar and as many drops of red food coloring as you'd like. Start with a few drops, and you can always add more to get the right shade. Seal it closed, and hand the bag to your child to shake! My kids love this part, and it's especially magical watching the color change!

  • Pom Poms - I found a great package of Valentine colored pom poms at my local dollar store.

  • Felt Hearts - another find at my local dollar store

  • Red Heart Gems - You can find these at your local dollar store or Hobby Lobby

  • 1 Red Container - this red box is from my local dollar store

  • 1 White Container - literally a cup from their play kitchen

  • 1 Pink Container - This little cup is from Target in their organizer bin section!

  • Wooden Scoops - Hobby Lobby

  • Wooden Tongs - Amazon (not available right now)

The actual materials don't matter so much as picking your theme and using whatever you have on hand! I love using colored rice as the base for these seasonal sensory bins!
