Summer 2020 Time Capsule

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

My friend Kelly came up with this cuuute summer 2020 time capsule idea! (Check her out on Instagram @kellyobranovic!) This summer was really different for most of us in this Covid season, but I think we all still have sweet memories to look back on and enjoy!

Kelly designed some polaroid printables for pictures, some cute pennants, and some extra illustrations to create a full time capsule for your kids! I love how this craft teaches our little ones to look back and appreciate memories and good times together! It's also an important exercise for little minds to remember what they've done and how they've grown.

Here's my version of the time capsule!

Supplies for the Time Capsule Box:

  • Paper mache box

  • Paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Glitter glue

  • Hot glue gun

  • 2 gold pipe cleaners

  • Cut-out illustrations from the printable pack

  • Gold letter stickers

Directions for the Time Capsule Box:

  1. Paint the paper mache box and let it dry.

  2. Cover the box with the glitter glue, spreading the glitter around with your finger or a paintbrush.

  3. Form the numbers "2020" out of pipe cleaner, using 1 pipe cleaner for 2 numbers.

  4. Hot glue the pipe cleaner numbers on.

  5. Hot glue the illustration cut-outs on.

  6. Add the "Summer" gold letter stickers.

Filling the Box:

Besides adding pictures in the "polaroids," I mainly collected little trinkets from the activities we did this summer. These are the main categories that I included:

  • Beach trinkets - a bottle of seashells and the salt dough seashells we made

  • Fourth of July trinkets - red, white, & blue foam stars and a bottle of red, white, & blue sequins to remind them of the confetti poppers we used

  • Pirate Trinkets - We did a whole week on pirates, so I grabbed some of the treasure from his treasure chest plus some chocolate coins for them to eat!

  • Astronaut Trinkets - We also did a whole week on space, so I grabbed some of the plastic toys and a bottle filled with tiny yellow stars.

  • Dinosaur Trinkets - Our last themed week was on dinosaurs, so I grabbed a plastic dinosaur and one of the salt dough fossils we made!

I'm so excited to share this time capsule box with Aaron and Olivia! I love talking through memories with them and hearing what really stood out. And it's so special to stop and be thankful for all of the positive things that have happened, even during a hard season! I hope that you can do something like this too with your little ones and enjoy some sweet moments together!
