This ocean twist on the classic salt dough recipe is from The Mama Notes and her summer camp series! Aaron opted to do all of the shapes instead of sticking with just starfish, which ended up being really fun! He loved squishing the dough together, then I rolled it out, and he cut out the shapes. Aaron was less excited about painting these sea creatures, but he loved shaking the glitter all over them! It kept us entertained throughout the day with each step, and then I added them to a simple ocean sensory bin for extra fun!
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1/2 cup table salt
3/4 cup water
Directions:
Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl. When it becomes too stiff to stir, use clean hands to bring the dough together.
Knead a few times until the dough is uniform and soft, about 3-5 minutes.
Divide dough into 2 or 3 sections and roll out to about 1/4-1/2 inch thick between two sheets of parchment paper. This will help prevent sticking.
Cut out with cookie cutters. Transfer shapes to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Repeat rolling and cutting out shapes to use up the dough.
Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
Bake for 2-2.5 hours or until firm to the touch.
Remove from oven, let cool, and paint if desired with acrylic or washable tempera paint and add pearls, sequins, and glitter.
Once paint is completely dry, seal with Mod Podge if desired (especially to seal in the glitter).
Here are the paint colors I used!
I dyed some rice a soft teal color for my simple ocean sensory bin. I added the rice into a large ziplock bag, added a splash of vinegar, and then added blue and green food coloring a couple drops at a time until I got the right shade. I spread out the rice on a paper towel to dry overnight, and then it was ready to use!
