Planet Marble Painting

Writer's picture: The Little ThingsThe Little Things

This was such a fun follow up to our space lesson! We reviewed the planet cards and then chose to make Mars come to life through this craft! You can easily do multiple planets and really talk through the different colors and patterns of each planet.

Supplies:

  • Black paper

  • White cardstock or watercolor paper

  • White paint

  • Paper plate for the white paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Multiple colors of paint to match the color scheme of the planet

  • Marbles

  • Craft or paint tray

Directions:

  1. Start by flicking white paint onto the black paper. Add white paint to the paper plate, add some water to make it runny, and then dip in your paintbrush. Carefully move your thumb across the bristles to splatter the white paint onto the page. Repeat until the paper is covered in plenty of "stars"!

  2. Place the white cardstock in the craft tray. Pour on your planet paint colors and add a little bit of water to make it slightly runny.

  3. Add the marbles to the craft tray.

  4. Show your child how to tilt the tray back and forth in one direction to start moving the paint around. Keep tilting back and forth until the page is covered and you like the design of the paint mixture.

  5. Once the paint is dry, use a bowl (or something else that's circular) and trace a circle on the painted paper. Cut out the circle and glue it onto the black starry page.

  6. I used my solar system cards and cut out the title from the Mars card and glued it onto our page.

This was such a fun craft that created lots of conversations about the planets while mixing in some hands-on fun!
