We're finishing up the letter "G" over here, and this lesson was all about gardens!
I highly recommend the book Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt to go with any garden lesson! Aaron was so fascinated through the whole book to see just how much the bugs and the animals are involved in the gardening process, and the illustrations are beautiful!
We used Habitat Schoolhouse's resources for garden yoga (which Aaron loved!), garden 3-part cards, and this really cute garden play dough mat.
I added this name recognition activity to the lesson. I've noticed that Aaron spells his name with all capital letters, so I wanted to start teaching him the lower case letters.
The first step was some fine-motor skill practice by using tape to attach the fruits and vegetables to the popsicle sticks. He got to practice pulling the tape out, cutting it, and then attaching the paper to the popsicle stick, which is hard work for a preschooler!
Then, he filled the pots with beans, he unscrambled the letters to spell his name, and he "planted" his name in the pots!
His last step was practicing tracing his name. I knew that he wouldn't enjoy the tracing part, but because we had been having so much fun with the sensory bin, he was willing to try it!
Click here to get the free printable to try this with your little one! Simply write in the letters of their name with a black marker. As an extra challenge, you could have your preschooler help you cut out the fruit and vegetables for some scissor practice!
